Ep 03. The Gods of Orisha
Who are the Orishas and how did they come to be? In this episode, we use Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi to explore the deep history of the West African deities known as the Orishas.
“They killed my mother. They took our magic. They tried to bury us. Now we rise.”
Children of Blood and Bone is the debut novel of Tomi Adeyemi. Part of a planned trilogy, it follows the heroine Zelie as she attempts to restore magic to the kingdom of Orisha. Under the orders of a ruthless king, anyone with powers was targeted and killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people-- the Maji-- without hope. So few survived with the power to use magic, that they must remain hidden.
Zélie is one such person. Now she has a chance to bring magic back to her people and strike against the monarchy. With the help of her brother and a rogue princess, Zélie must learn to harness her powers and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.
